Canine appeal on albums
09-29-2009

Continuing a long-standing relationship between dogs and artists, the cover of Weezer's new album, Raditude, features an exuberant pup.

Singer-guitarist Rivers Cuomo spotted the photo of Sidney the dog in the readers' photos section of National Geographic magazine and decided the image would be a good match for the group's Oct. 27 album.

While some ridicule Weezer's made-up title and wacky cover art, pet lovers say Cuomo deserves an extra chew treat.

The canine album cover has a long pedigree, including James Taylor's One Man Dog (1972) with a dog in a boat, Beck's Odelay (1994) featuring a high-jumping komondor, and Iron and Wine's multihued The Shepherd's Dog (2007).

The popularity of dogs on album covers doesn't surprise Greg MacAyeal, assistant head librarian at Northwestern University Music Library. He recently co-curated Sound Design: The Rise and Demise of Album Art at the university.

“Seeing a dog will grab the attention of many people. Dogs are familiar to people, even if they are not dog or pet owners. I think that appeal translates to artwork for album covers,” MacAyeal said.

MacAyeal notes that one of the earliest images associated with a phonograph was a fox terrier with an ear cocked to the sound. Nipper the dog became a trademark of the Victor Talking Machine Co. in 1901.

High-flying Sidney probably won't be as memorable as Nipper in 100 years.

However there's a chance that Sidney could earn a place in dog trivia history with Alice in Chains' sad three-legged dog or the dog in the shirt and tie on Rick Springfield's Working Class Dog or Paul Leary's bewigged canine on the cover of The History of Dogs.
