Police dog gets the gun and nabs the gunman
09-02-2009

A police dog named Blaze deserved some extra kibble Tuesday in what turned out to be a big day for police canines. He sniffed out the gun, which turned out to be a BB gun, and the gunman.

The 7-year-old German Shepard was called into action by the New York Police Department and told to find a gunman who had tossed his gun under a car in the Bronx, according to the New York Daily News.

The gun-loving German shepherd picked up the discarded weapon in his mouth, and then ...

... matching the scent on the weapon to the scent on the pavement, tracked the suspect more than a block and a half. Earlier, police officer Isabelle De La Cruz and her partner, William Beissel, had gotten the call of a man with a gun on a city bus.

When they rolled up to scene, the gunman bolted. By the time De La Cruz found him in the backyard, the suspect had brought in his twin and set up the dominos.

Blaze followed the scent to Rahsheim Francis, 17, who was busted for weapon possession.

He's not the only police dog in the headlines:

- In Framingham, Mass., Tuesday, another police dog was called into action and found nearly $68 worth of meat stuffed in a man's pants.

- In Atlantic City, N.J., K9 dogs are being pulled off the streets. Mayor Lorenzo Langford is conducting a review in the wake of alleged abuse by dogs during arrests.

- In Zanesville, Ohio a police dog named Bosco is recovering after it was shot in the chest and neck when he and his handler were serving a warrant, according to a Columbus Dispatch story. Ohio State veterinarians are doing an hour of rehab three times a day with Bosco. The veterinary school has updates on his remarkable attempts to recover.
